Are Arsenal interested in signing Kingsley Coman from Bayern Munich this summer? Who knows? Certainly not the big players in Germany.
That’s at least if we look at what journalists Florian Plettenberg and Christian Falk have to say on the matter, with them very much on opposite sides of the fence on the matter.
Plettenberg reports that Bayern are prepared to let Coman go this summer, and talks are set to begin on that front soon. He adds that Arsenal are ‘already in contact’ with the player’s camp alongside the top four clubs in Saudi Arabia
He then says a deal could be done for €35-40m for Arsenal, with the forward expecting to earn around €16-17m a year gross if he moves to the Emirates.
That’s all very specific and would suggest that, as he claims, talks have already been held about a move to Arsenal this summer.
That, though, is something Falk disputes completely. In fact, he is insistent that Arsenal are not interested in the French star at all.
He recently appeared on BILD to discuss transfers, when the subject of Arsenal being interested in Coman was brought to him. He insisted that is not on the cards, and it was in fact Liverpool who want him.
“First of all, a ‘Not True’. That’s a first for us on the show,” he said.
“Sometimes you have to be able to split things up. So ‘Not True’. Arsenal aren’t in this contest. But I have heard it’s ‘True’ that Liverpool are actually interested in him. He’s on the shortlist.”
So, who do we choose to believe? That’s a hard one given these two journalists have a penchant for over dramatising potential transfers for the love on X, often flip flopping to best suit how the story breaks elsewhere in the process.
We’re inclined to go with Falk, who very rarely outright denies anything if it’s transfer related, often as a way to cover his own back further down the line if things swing in a different direction. The fact he’s done so here feels significant.
There’s also a case to be made that this would be such an underwhelming signing for Arsenal, given links to Nico Williams, that surely new director of football Andrea Berta wouldn’t consider it.
It’s a matter of wait and see but in Germany it seems they can’t decide and so there’s a very clear split between Plettenberg at Sky and Falk at BILD on the matter.
