Kiko Casilla’s suspension in first half of 2020 allowed Illan Meslier to feature regularly for Leeds United and the Frenchman has cemented his position as the Whites’ first-choice goalkeeper since then.
The former Real Madrid man was forced to spend more time on the bench last season and a lack of game time saw him join Elche CF on a season-long loan deal in the previous window.
Casilla has started in 12 league games, keeping three clean sheets and conceding 15 goals in the process for Elche.
The 35-year-old’s contract with Marcelo Bielsa’s side runs down in 2023 and Leeds will have a decision to make next summer, when he returns from his loan spell.
He has already made it clear his time at Elland Road is ‘over’ and remains hopeful Leeds will let him leave them on a permanent transfer next year.
Marca on Thursday have reviewed performances of some La Liga players and regarding the Spaniard, they label him ‘the disappointment’.
Taking the Leeds owned player’s experience and career into consideration, the newspaper states he has ‘offered a lower level than expected’ at Elche.
Casilla has also ‘given a feeling of insecurity’ in ‘several games’ as he could have done ‘something more’ to prevent some of the goals he has conceded.
This could make it hard for him to fulfil his wish to leave the Premier League side and also difficult for Leeds to sell him next summer.
Casilla still has time to turn things around, but he needs to act fast.
