On January 28th, we covered claims from German newspaper Bild about Schalke signing Manchester City youngster Rabbi Matondo.

It was explained that City had originally rejected a €10m offer from the Bundesliga club for the 18 year old, but were now prepared to sell him for €5-7m.

That’s because a buyback clause was being put in the deal, which Bild believed would be around €30m.

Kicker have it differently on Wednesday.

They believe Schalke are paying €9m to sign Matondo. That could be because they also report the buyback clause would actually be €50m, much more than Bild had suggested.

On Tuesday morning, Bild were sticking to their figures. On Tuesday evening, they said they’d learned from England (it’s not clear whether that’s from Manchester City sources or the media) that the initial fee would be up to €10m and a buyback clause would be €55m.

The transfer fee being paid by Schalke doesn’t make a whole lot of difference, but the disagreement over the buyback amount could be down to clauses in the contract based on the player’s achievements.
