Gerrard arrived at Ibrox last summer and has guided Rangers to 2nd in the Scottish Premiership table after 21 games.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, Kuyt spoke about Gerrard leaving his role at Liverpool to take on the big task at Rangers: “When Steven Gerrard just became a coach with the Liverpool youth, I talked to him about the road he was going to follow. He made a conscious choice to leave Liverpool right away.”
The Dutchman added: “He wants to develop himself as a coach outside the spotlights of the Premier League. Glasgow Rangers is a big club. His dream will be to eventually become a coach at Liverpool. In order to get there, he also travels his own way.”
Gerrard has impressed in his first season at Rangers and his side are currently just behind local rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership race. The former Liverpool captain also took the Scottish side to the semi-finals of the League Cup, only to lose to Celtic.
With the success he’s had in his relative short time with Rangers there was always going to be speculation he would one day eventually return to Anfield to manage the club he spent over a decade with and it seems Kuyt shares this opinion.
