Following Darwin Nunez’s exceptional season with Benfica, scoring goals against European giants in the Champions League, it became obvious that Premier League clubs would be battling for him this summer.

Many English sides were linked, and Liverpool managed to win the race very early, even though they needed to spend a big chunk of money to secure a deal.

It turns out, however, that some other clubs had been interested in Darwin before he even arrived at Benfica. And one of them was Tottenham Hotspur.

The revelation was made by João Gonçalves, Almeria’s sporting director, who signed him for the Spanish side in 2019 and had him playing for the club for one year, until the striker was sold to Benfica.

“When we sold him, there were other clubs that had referenced him like Brighton, Tottenham, Inter and Barcelona,” Gonçalves told Record.

“Together we chose Benfica. He believed it would be best for personal development.”

Benfica spent €39m to sign Darwin from Almeria in the summer of 2020, which was quite a big deal for the Portuguese market, as despite being used to selling players for big amounts, it’s not the same case when buying.

In two years at Benfica, Darwin scored 47 goals, with 34 of them being in this last season. That was obviously a great investment made by the Eagles, and would probably have been the same for Tottenham.
