Returning to your former club tends to be a poisoned chalice, just ask José Mourinho.
However, for David Luiz, who is currently in his second spell with Chelsea, this time under Antonio Conte, things are going pretty well.
Sold by Paris Saint-Germain in the last few days of the transfer window, the Brazilian centre-back has adapted rather well to the Italian’s rigid demands at Stamford Bridge, and everything points to his second spell at Chelsea being better than his first.
While Conte ended up with the centre-back he really wanted and needed, David Luiz’s departure left Paris Saint-Germain a man short in defence, having failed to attract a replacement in time.
This, according to Patrick Kluivert, Paris Saint-Germain’s director of football, was down to the timing of the transfer, as explained in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche.
He said: “It was impossible because he [Luiz] left on the last day of the transfer market. We talked together, and we concluded that it was the best option for him and the team. We also decided Aurier could play in the middle, but yes, we’re now looking for someone in that spot.”
The former Dutch striker also touched upon the future of Thiago Silva, whose agent spoke to Sport Witness last month, and the French club’s will to renew his contract in the near future.
Paulo Tonietto told us back in early October that they were not ‘negotiating a new contract’, but that they would see what happened in December.
With the key month fast approaching and Kluivert admitting to the club wanting to renew their star defender, Tonietto and Silva might get what they’ve been waiting for in the coming weeks.
