The sporting director of Ternana has told the Italian media Felipe Avenatti was never going to leave the club in this transfer window.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to Leeds United, and the Championship club now have the chance to land him on a free transfer in the summer.
Ternana News have reported on comments Danilo Pagni made in a press conference with regards to Avenatti. Pagni confirmed it was never in doubt Avenatti would be leaving in this window despite the prospect of losing him on a free transfer in the summer. The Ternana director now expects the Uruguayan to fight for the team as they look to avoid relegation to Lega Pro.
“Avenatti remaining has certainly never been in doubt. He must always play with this competitive nastiness like the whole team, from the first to the last man,” said Pagni
It now seems Avenatti will see out his contract with the Serie B club and a scramble to sign the South American is now likely to happen in the summer.
Leeds United could be one of those clubs looking to snap the player up on a free transfer after their previous attempts to sign him. Leeds United made an approach for Avenatti in the last window, but again were unsuccessful.
Leeds United will face competition from a host of Serie A and B clubs looking to take Avenatti on a free.
