As the end of Fabian Balbuena’s contract with West Ham United gets closer, it becomes more clear that the defender will not stay at the Premier League side.

The Paraguay international hasn’t shown any signs of a renewal with the Hammers, and with his agent teasing with a move out of the club, it really seems like the end of his time in London.

Rumours in Brazil at the weekend claimed that Atletico Mineiro could be Balbuena’s next destination. The defender already played for Corinthians in the South American country, and could now be back at the age of 29.

However, journalist Jorge Nicola went after this story to find out more, and explains that it isn’t happening.

The reporter first claims that according to Balbuena’s agent, Renato Bittar, the idea is for the player to continue in England or to move to Italian football.

The defender wants to play with ‘more frequency’, and the possibility of returning to South America is ‘very little’.

Nicola also spoke to Atlético director Rodrigo Caetano, who claimed the club have ‘zero’ chances of signing the defender this year.

Balbuena made 18 appearances for West Ham this season, and has rarely been used by David Moyes in 2021, with only two appearances in the Premier League this year, which is where his urge for minutes comes from.
