Benfica chief Rui Costa has revealed it was ‘completely impossible’ for them to stop Darwin Nunez from joining Liverpool this summer.
The Uruguayan striker joined the Reds in a €75m deal from the Portuguese side this summer following two years in Portugal.
He had been the star of the show at Benfica during that period, scoring 48 goals and registering 16 assists in 85 games for the club.
That led to a host of interest in his signature, with Manchester United also linked with a move throughout the summer.
He eventually ended up at Liverpool, with them spending big to lure him to Anfield as part of rebuild up front.
Things have not worked out quite as many were hoping for the striker, with it even reported this week that internally the deal has been labelled a failure.
That’s not the feeling at Benfica, though, who are more than happy with the money they received from Liverpool.
“We are talking about one of the highest transfers of the market,” Costa old BTV, relayed by A Bola.
“We are still coming out of a pandemic situation, which held back the football market. Making a sale of €75+€25M is not open to discussion.
“The sale of Darwin is more than justified, there weren’t even conditions to keep him, it was completely impossible, for the values that came into the club and for what Darwin went on to earn.”
