We can all remember how intense was Tottenham Hotspur’s quest to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting in January, as Spurs needed to make a big effort to convince the Lions of letting him go.
That was obviously a tough time for the fullback as well, as he always seemed ready to join Antonio Conte’s side, but didn’t know if his club would accept the transfer.
Porro spoke this week to Sport TV, and recalled what happened in the final days of the transfer windows. He claims that now that things are calmer, he’s managing to adapt to Tottenham and English football.
“The last days were a bit intense, it was difficult, but I had to move on with my life,” Porro told Sport TV (via Record).
“It’s been a big change, but I think I’m doing well. The first few weeks were tough because of the language, I didn’t understand English very well, but now I understand it better, and I hope it stays that way because that will be the most important thing.”
The fullback also talked about the different kind of game he found in the Premier League, claiming Tottenham can find difficulty against any team they face.
“The pace is different, I noticed that right in the first game, the pace is more intense, and the style of play is more physical. At Sporting I had more ball and here there are better teams, I have to defend more, and these are things I’m learning little by little.
“At Sporting they attacked more, the model is similar to that of Tottenham but they attacked more. Here, the last in the table can beat us, and that for me makes this championship more beautiful.”
Speaking of his adaptation, Porro mentioned the friendship with Eric Dier, who grew at Sporting’s academy and speaks fluent Portuguese.
“I was well received. I had already played against them for Sporting, in the Champions League, so they already knew me. As I said, I was well received from the first day, and I also tried to adapt to them.
“Dier helped me a lot because, soon on the first day, he sent me a message offering to help with anything I needed. It helps a lot in a new country with new colleagues. I can only say that I am grateful to him as he helped me a lot.”
Since joining Tottenham in January, Porro has made six appearances for the club. He was starter in their last two Premier League games and should soon own that place in the team.
