Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn has admitted he found his time with Tottenham ‘difficult’ due to his lack of playing time.

The forward returned to his former club in a €31.25m deal earlier this month after months of speculation about a return to his homeland.

Ajax had tried to sign him in the January transfer window but could not reach an agreement with Tottenham over his asking price.

The Dutch giants returned this summer and, despite protracted negotiations with Tottenham, eventually got a deal over the line.

Bergwijn has been forthcoming about his time in London since his return, openly admitting he struggled to make the impact he wanted.

He joined Tottenham in a €30m deal from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 but, despite a bright start, would only manage eight goals and ten assists in 83 games for the club.

That was largely due to him playing a bit part role under a succession of managers, something the player himself admits he was frustrated by.

“That was difficult. Especially mentally,” he told Algemeen Dagblad.

“You don’t play much. If you get in, you’re important. But then you can sit down again.

“I thought I showed I could take a chance. But if you see how many minutes I got. I think that was disproportionate.”
