TOP Oss striker Richonell Margaret has revealed he was convinced to turn down an offer from Manchester City earlier in his career by his father.

Margaret is currently on loan at Oss from AZ Alkmaar, who he joined on a free transfer from Vitesse in July 2019.

Before then has been a part of Ajax’s youth system, joining them in 2009 and spending nine years at the club.

His career has really yet to get going in the Netherlands, with neither Ajax nor Vitesse proving to be the place for him to flourish.

While he made his Eredivisie debut for the latter, aged just 18, his time at the club was limited to just one season when contract negotiations proved the pair had differences that could not be fixed.

It was then that he decided to join Alkmaar, but not before considering offers from elsewhere, with Voetbalzone reporting Manchester City, Fortuna Sittard, and Anderlecht were all ‘concretely interested’.

Manchester City are obviously the standout name in that list but moving to the Etihad would have meant leaving the Netherlands, something it seems the striker was advised against.

“It was difficult for a while, but my father and manager clearly explained the advantages of AZ and the disadvantages of going abroad,” he told VoetbalZone.

“Then I saw that AZ was the best for me. I certainly don’t regret that I went to AZ, they are good with young players, and you can really develop yourself there. It really is a top club.

“My father is very important for my career; he helps me with everything. We train together a lot, he pushes me, and I am definitely grateful to him.

“He used to play football at a high level himself, but due to injuries, he didn’t make it. Now he can save me from the mistakes he made. He gives me a lot of advice.”
