Following their exit in the Europa League semi-final at the hands of Villarreal, Arsenal face the prospect of their first season without a European competition in a very long time.

Mikel Arteta made it very clear how distraught he and his players were after the game, and perhaps he knew a lot rested on that game.

According to Spanish journalist Kike Marin, it’s now ‘very difficult’ for the former Manchester City assistant manager to ‘continue next season on Arsenal’s bench’.

While the results have something to do with it, since the Gunners are currently languishing in ninth in the Premier League, it’s stated Arteta has also ‘lost the trust of most of the players’.

Furthermore, Marin adds that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ‘starting to be another case like Özil’s’, which is something Arsenal ‘cannot allow’.

Some difficult weeks and months ahead for the Spaniard, who will most likely see out the current campaign either way, but it could be the Premier League club’s board end up making a difficult decision, regardless of how much patience they said they would initially give Arteta.
