Diego Maradona has been very talkative recently, probably because he has a book out, and he’s granted a lengthy interview to Spanish newspaper Marca.

He talks about all the expected things, but a question about the Argentine legend returning to coaching leads him to Rafa Benitez, the manager’s time at Real Madrid, and then subsequently getting the job at Newcastle United.

Maradona appears to believe that Benitez was fortunate to be given the Newcastle United opportunity, having, as Maradona sees it, failed with Real Madrid.

But after a while, after failing there, they give him three years in Newcastle. Can someone explain it to me? Is that normal or does something go wrong?”

Maybe Maradona believes Benitez should have been carted off to a retirement home.

Maradona was of course an absolute cult hero for Napoli, where Benitez had quite a few problems before making the switch back to Spain, maybe that has something to do with it.
