Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero was not making empty promises when he said he could return to Independiente in future.
That’s according to former teammate Emiliano Armenteros, who played with the Argentine at Independiente earlier in his career.
Agüero is currently in the final year of his contract at Manchester City, with that set to expire next summer.
He is unlikely to extend beyond then, with it widely accepted the striker, who will be 32-years-old by that point, will move on after ten years in England.
A move to MLS has been mooted, with David Beckham’s Inter Miami thought to be big admirers, though a return to Argentina is more likely.
Agüero has long admitted he wants to return to his former club when the time comes, and Armenteros believes that was no empty promise.
“I am sure that Kun Agüero will return to Independiente,” he to TyC Sports.
“He didn’t sell smoke when he promised his return. When he said it he was a boy, but I know him, and I know he will return in good condition. He’s still a force.”
It will undoubtedly be interesting to see where Agüero ends up when he does finally leave Manchester City next summer.
His departure is almost inevitable at this point but where he ends up afterwards is in the air. There will undoubtedly be a long line of suitors for him and plenty of temptations to stay in Europe.
That could end up delaying any emotional return to Independiente for the meantime unless Agüero’s heart is truly set on it.
