At the weekend, we’ve seen Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Notícias claiming Gonçalo Guedes will be ‘on his way out of Valencia’ this summer.
It was reported that the player, who has a contract with the La Liga side until 2023, would cost no more than €20m, and already has a couple of clubs who’d like to sign him.
The story said the likes of Roma and Wolverhampton Wanderers both ‘positioned themselves’ in the hunt for the 25-year-old, and could use their relationship with Jorge Mendes to get the signing done.
As the information made some noise in the Italian media, we now get to see newspaper Il Messaggero featuring an interview with former Roma defender Amedeo Carboni, who had a lot of good things to say about Guedes.
“He’s the classic winger who can do anything anywhere. He has shooting, game vision, dribbling. He’s a boy who has not yet fully expressed his potential. He must be completed,” said Carboni (via Voce Gialorossa).
“As soon as he arrived in Valencia he was the author of a tremendous exploit, then last year, thanks to some injuries, he got lost a bit. Now he’s back to his levels. He has an impressive talent.”
“A year ago Fiorentina called me because they were very interested. He reminds me a lot of the first Cancelo. Spalletti phoned me for the full-back and asked me what I thought. I replied that he was a diamond in the rough. And the same goes for Guedes. If Roma takes him, they make a bargain.”
With Guedes available for such a small price, that’s undoubtedly a great chance for Roma or Wolves to have a shot, especially in case Jorge Mendes does decide to help any of those clubs in the negotiations. And since it sounds like both sides could afford the transfer this summer, perhaps that will come down to the player choosing between José Mourinho and Bruno Lage.
