Hakan Calhanoglu began being linked with Manchester United in October, just as the AC Milan player hit difficulties in renewal negotiations with the Serie A club.

It was claimed the Premier League side had offered him a five year contract, to arrive as a free agent in the coming summer window.

There were multiple claims in the Italian media, and it was clear the Milan player was asking for far higher wages than his club were willing to commit to.

Manchester United interest was reported across the Italian media, yet, as we explained at the time, it felt very much like the Red Devils being dragged into the picture to help Calhanoglu strengthen his hand in negotiations with the Rossoneri.

Then came a surprising claim from Germany, with Bild journalist Christian Falk telling Sempre Milan that Calhanoglu had a ‘90%’ chance of becoming a Manchester United player.

Before adding the 90% transfer bombshell, Falk had been quoted as saying: “According to our information, the first talks between Manchester and the entourage of Calhanoglu about a transfer in 2021 already took place this summer.

“At that time, things were already very advanced. This is supported by the fact that the management rejected an offer from Juventus for an immediate transfer in 2020 shortly before the end of the transfer deadline.”

Since then, Manchester United have drifted out of the Italian reports and a move looks less likely. Calciomercato today say negotiations over a renewal are continuing and there’s ‘growing optimism’ that an agreement can be found soon.
