Fernando Torres will leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the season and if Antoine Griezmann decides to swap the Spanish capital club for Barcelona, the Rojiblancos will be in the market for a new forward.
According to Radio Marca, Atletico have identified Sergio Aguero as a summer transfer target. The striker, who left the La Liga outfit for Manchester City in 2011, has two years left on his contract at the Etihad.
Contacts have already been made as Atletico reached out to Aguero’s camp to find out if he would be open to the idea of returning to his former club.
The Argentine international has not dismissed the thought of rejoining Atletico, say Marca, but for now remains focused on the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Thus, the two parties have postponed the talks.
The Europa League finalists are working towards keeping Griezmann at the Wanda Metropolitano, but even if the Frenchman stays, Atletico are still looking at the option of signing Aguero.
Signing the South American star seemed like an uphill task for Atletico. However, they have managed to change that after presenting a sports project, which is “fulfilling the expectations of the player”.
Aguero won the Europa League and the Uefa Super Cup during his five seasons with Atletico between 2006 and 2011.
Perhaps this is wishful thinking from Marca, because Aguero has always insisted he’ll end his career in Argentina. Unless Manchester City agree to a very low fee then there’d be little point in Atletico paying a lot for a player who turns 30 this year, and who is on record about his desire to go back home.
