Alex Babos moved to Real Union on loan in the summer window and is slowly working his way into the club’s first team picture.
He’s mainly been on the bench for the Segunda Division side so far this season, with a couple of short substitute appearances, but got 54 minutes just over a week against Barakaldo, playing as an attacking midfielder, and another small cameo at the weekend.
The 20 year old was able to make the move because of a good relationship between Derby County and the Spanish club, report Diario Vasco, and the newspaper have managed a chat with Babos.
Diario Vasco put it to the youngster that he was captain of Derby’s U23 team when he heard Real Union were interested, and ask him what his initial thoughts were: “When they told me that I had the opportunity to come and play here I thought it could be a great opportunity for my career. After all, I think that the football played here is different from that in England and that I could learn many things. So taking this into account, I was very happy when they told me to come to play for Real Union.”
Asked if he was worried about leaving behind his family and friends to move to Spain for the season, Babos said: “Of course it’s hard to leave all my family in England for a year or for the time I will be playing in Irun (the Basque town the club are based in), but I think it was important to say yes because this is a good experience not only for football, but also for the rest of my life.”
On learning Spanish, the Derby player confirmed he’s going through the process because it’ll help him communicate with his new teammates: “I am learning and with my teammates I try because there are very few who speak English.”
And then he was asked about food: “That’s a lot better than in England. I like to go for tapas.”
Diairo Vasco end their article by saying: ‘Another day we will explain that they are pintxos (in the Basque region), not tapas.’
