Championship side Derby County are reportedly interested in the Marítimo midfielder Alex Soares.
As reported by O Jogo today, Gary Rowett’s side are alongside Genoa and Portuguese clubs in the race for the 26-year-old.
All this competition has been attracted because Soares’ contract with Marítimo is expiring at the end of the season, which means he will be able to join any other club for free.
After growing through several levels of Benfica’s academy, Soares has experienced playing for different Portuguese clubs, and even spent a season at Greek side Panserraikos before joining Marítimo back in 2013.
Although the player previously claimed his wish to stay at the club, a move abroad is seen by the local press as a good step in his career, as Marítimo aren’t really a side with great ambitions.
But O Jogo doesn’t seem to have any information on whether there were contacts with Derby County or where the negotiations stand.
Rowett will now be looking to add to his Derby squad for next season and a free transfer here and there would help with the budget.
