Playing at Manchester United for a year and a half, Memphis Depay never managed to recapture the form he displayed at PSV Eindhoven.
Rarely used by José Mourinho due to the fact the manager had so many wingers at his disposal, the Dutchman was eventually sold to Lyon in France on Friday, and swiftly presented to the press a few hours later.
Clearly delighted to be there, the forward was more than happy to answer questions about the transfer, which stands at €16m up front with €9m in bonuses (€6m on club achievements and €3m if he signs a new contract with the Ligue 1 side).
Asked about how the transfer to Lyon came about, the player explained: “We had a couple of clubs who were interested. My agent had a good feeling about Lyon. He was visiting the manager and the president. After he said that, I trusted him. It shows how much interest there was. Everybody was involved. I felt it was the right place for me to go.”
His lack of game time this season a concern for fans, the player tried to reassure everybody that he was fit, and the former Manchester United player also made it clear he doesn’t have a grudge against his now ex-club.
He said: “I just want to show everybody what I’m capable of. I did it in the past. I didn’t show it every time at Manchester. If I get the confidence and I get the rhythm with everybody behind me then it will come.
“I don’t feel like I need to get revenge on Manchester. I respect them all. They helped me to get me in a better situation as well, so it’s not an angry feeling, but for myself I want to put things together. I want to score goals like I used to do.”
During his time with the Red Devils, Memphis Depay made 56 appearances, scored seven goals and picked up seven assists.
He also made one appearance for the club’s reserves, where he walked away with three assists.
