Former Leeds United forward Mirco Antenucci has been at the forefront with current club SPAL to help victims of the recent earthquake in central Italy. The 32-year-old joined the Serie B side after being released by Leeds United in the summer, and has already made an impression on and off the pitch.
Estense have reported SPAL have teamed up with ‘Un’azione per un sorriso’, which is a charity that normally helps needy children in southern Italy. This week SPAL wore a special jersey in the first half during their game against Hellas Verona, and afterwards these were auctioned off on eBay for the quake cause.
In addition, Antenucci has been selling off his football equipment in order to add to the funds raised by SPAL. Anything raised by the Serie B side will now be sent on by ‘Un’azione per un sorriso’ to the Italian Red Cross, who will then allocate this to the victims of last month’s earthquake.
Antenucci spent two seasons at Elland Road following his move from Ternana in 2014, and was the top scorer at the club in his first season in England. The Italian exited the club in May when his contract expired, and has since gone on record to criticise the Massimo Cellino regime.
Back home in Italy, Antenucci is doing well for SPAL, and doing his bit to help his compatriots too.
