Jannik Vestergaard should have already held the Southampton scarf above his head, report Danish newspaper BT.

It’s explained that the plan had been to present the central defender on Wednesday, but Southampton weren’t able to do that and there’s been a ‘pause’ on the deal.

BT say sources have told them that Borussia Monchengladbach are yet to give approval for the transfer to be made official.

The issue is thought to be completely at the Bundesliga club end and nothing to do with Saints or the player.

Vestergaard passed his medical on Tuesday and Southampton are now twiddling their thumbs waiting for the go-ahead to arrive from Germany.

The ‘final paperwork’ is the issue and it’s just ‘formalities’ to be sorted out, it sounds like some routine pen-pushing. BT say the deal should be announced within a few days.

They don’t say so, but it could surely be as soon as today once Borussia Monchengladbach are able to put their final stamp of approval on the Southampton transfer.
