Denmark coach Brian Riemer has admitted he’s been convinced by Manchester United January signing Patrick Dorgu, having once questioned his defensive skills.
Tipsbladet cover comments from the Denmark coach today after he included Dorgu in his latest squad for the next international break.
Dorgu is seen as one of the rising stars of Danish football, with many expecting him to be the face of the Danish national team for many years to come.
His move to Manchester United in January has ‘hardly weakened’ this candidacy, with him now playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs in the biggest league in the world.
Big questions still remain over the youngster, though, who has so far had limited experience in Italian football and at 20-years-old undeniably still has years of development left in front of him.
The biggest debate is whether he has the defensive capabilities, with him very much playing an attacking role in Italy and continuing that under Ruben Amorim at Manchester United so far.
It seems Riemer was one of those who had such doubts about the full-back, but now he insists that he’s been convinced otherwise.
“He has really convinced me,” he said.
“I dare to tell you now that I was a little doubtful in Lecce, because when I watched the games, he was more of a winger than a back, and his defensive skills were… debatable. But I have seen him many times now, and I am actually quite impressed with what he has achieved defensively.
“Defensively, my doubts were there, and he has convinced me there. He has done it strongly. There are still small things that can be done better, but even in the best league in the world, he has delivered.
“I think he has proven that for Manchester United. I know that they play with a wingback, but many times he has ended up as a back, and that is why I have had him under the microscope and looked at how he defends. The situations I have analysed have convinced me that he can do both.”
