Despite signing for Aston Villa back in January for £4.5m, Frédéric Guilbert returned to Caen on loan until the end of the season in a bid to help the French side avoid the drop back down to Ligue 2.

The defender, who put pen to paper to a four year deal at Villa Park, sat down with France Bleu on Tuesday, where he was asked about his upcoming move and the criticism he has received from fans since.

He said: “Now, some of them have maybe been over the top. Then again, I can understand. I’ve signed for Aston Villa. Many think my head is elsewhere. I knew these things would happen. I even said it as soon as I signed for Aston Villa.”

However, the right-back made it clear he was “1000%” focused on the task at hand and certainly wasn’t already looking to his future in the Championship (or maybe the Premier League?) under Dean Smith.

Fully focused on trying to save his local side (he grew up in the area), the 24-year-old has made it clear he is a professional and will do what is asked of him until the very end.

Guilbert has made 30 appearances in all competitions for Caen this season, starting 86% of his team’s league games during which he has picked up two assists.

The Ligue 1 side currently sit 18th in the table, seven points from 17th placed Amiens.
