Helsingborg defender Andreas Granqvist has said he wasn’t close to a transfer to Manchester United, but he is a supporter of the Premier League club.

In the lead up to the last winter transfer window the Sweden international was linked with a move to Old Trafford. It was a strange story, but there was insistence in Sweden.

Speaking to HIF’s Youtube channel, Granqvist was asked if he nearly joined Manchester United in January: “Not close. It’s all about HIF.”

The central defender added when quizzed about his favourite sportsperson: “I’ve been watching a lot of different sports and a lot of players, but maybe one in football, so maybe David Beckham. Because I’ve been a United supporter.”

Last October we covered claims from the Swedish press that Granqvist was an option for Manchester United as Mourinho looked to bring in an experienced central defender. The player previously had a spell in the Premier League with Wigan Athletic.

At the time the Swedish media suggested the 33 year old could head to Old Trafford in a similar loan deal as when Henrik Larsson joined the English club in 2007.

However, with the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjær in December, speculation with regards to Manchester United’s interest in Granqvist went away.
