Brighton & Hove Albion captain Bruno has told the Spanish media Brighton was his second choice, but former manager Gus Poyet convinced him to sign.

The Spaniard has spent five seasons with the now Premier League side, going on a journey which has led them to the promised land.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo ahead of Brighton’s friendly with Atletico Madrid, Bruno was asked why he signed for the south coast club: “I played with Vicente, with whom I had a great relationship in Valencia. They were interested in me and I had several options after my contract ended.

“Brighton was my second choice, but the coach called me, who was Poyet, and convinced me quickly. I was very attracted to the project, and then the city was something, because I was going with the family. It is a fantastic area, well connected, close to the airport.”

Bruno signed for Brighton in 2012 after being released by Spanish side Valencia. The right back has since gone on to make nearly 200 appearances for the club, and in March extended his contract for another year.

Brighton last season finally achieved promotion to the Premier League, and Bruno’s experience will be vital for Chris Houghton’s side going into the new season.

The Seagulls face a difficult task in their first game back in the top flight, when they welcome Manchester City to the Amex Stadium next weekend. This is followed by a trip to former Premier League champions Leicester City seven days later.
