It’s been claimed FC Sion wouldn’t offer Reto Ziegler a new contract after he publicly boasted about Celtic wanting to sign him.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers made initial steps to sign Ziegler, but a deal never materialised for the Scottish Premiership champions. Ziegler now looks set for a return to FC Sion after holding talks with his former club in recent days.

In mid June, Ziegler was asked by Swiss newspaper Blick about Celtic and Real Betis interest, and was happy to confirm it: “That’s true. But before I meet with these two clubs, I will be working with the leaders of Sion. In the next two weeks I’ll know more.

“The offers (from Celtic and Betis) also honour me. But without wanting to sound bigheaded: I think I deserve it, I’ve played a good season.”

Celtic interest didn’t seem to go much further, without it being claimed that either Ziegler has turned the Scottish Premiership champions down, or Rodgers had moved on to other targets.

Neue Zürcher Zeitung have today reported Sion are closing in on Ziegler, despite releasing their captain at the end of the season. It’s been widely reported in the Swiss media he wasn’t offered a contract extension due to concerns over the injures he suffered last season.

However, the Zurich newspaper claims Sion president Christian Constantin didn’t offer the player a new contract because he went public about Celtic holding talks to sign him.

Last month, RTS reported Ziegler and Sion were ‘unable to agree on the financial terms of an extension’, but Celtic claims went quiet.

Constantin announced Ziegler no longer had a future at his club due to the defender’s actions, but it seems he’s set to make a u-turn with the player.
