Manchester United’s world tour before the start of this season is one of the causes of the current problems they are facing.

That’s according to Marco van Basten, who has called the decision to travel around the world in pre-season ‘ridiculous’ and ‘idiotic’.

Manchester United have started the season with back-to-back defeats, first suffering defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford and then Brentford last weekend.

The loss to the Bees was a particularly chastening one, with Erik ten Haag’s side 4-0 down inside 35 minutes courtesy of goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbuemo.

While that was humiliating, the statistics after the game made for an even more disappointing reading as it was revealed they ran 14km less than the Bees.

It hinted at a lack of fitness throughout the whole Manchester United squad and Van Basten believes it has something to do with the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

“What I find strange is that every year in the preparation they make a kind of world tour,” Soccer Nieuws report him saying.

“That kills the group. It’s ridiculous, idiotic. They have to stop doing that. Physically, it’s just heartbreakingly bad.

“They do everything they can to make more money, but it’s nonsense.”
