After Barcelona agreed a deal with Ajax for Frenkie de Jong in January, his teammate Matthijs de Ligt was linked with the La Liga winners and Manchester City.

The Netherlands international has been a target for the Catalan club and their president Josep Maria Bartomeu also confirmed his side’s interest in the 19-year-old.

Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws spoke to former Ajax forward Ronald de Boer and during the course of the interview, he was asked about De Ligt.

“He is really good. Nineteen years and show all of this. Matthijs plays at an unprecedented high level. Both with the Netherlands and with Ajax,” De Boer said.

“He keeps going stoically, is great when he is standing in front of the camera. What a personality. He can go to just about any club. Barcelona, Manchester City or PSG – in that order – seem like the best options.”

Clearly, De Boer thinks a move to the Etihad is the second best option for the defender, but what really matters is that if the player is keen on joining Manchester City in the summer.

Earlier today, we carried a report from Mundo Deportivo, who explained the centre-back wants to play alongside his compatriot De Jong at the Camp Nou next season.

However, his agent Mino Raiola wants to take his client to ‘economically profitable’ clubs like Manchester United, Bayern Munich or Juventus.

De Ligt is unlikely to be thinking about his future as his immediate focus will be on the Champions League semi-final clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.
