Since Luka Modric arrived at Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, the Croatian’s impact in midfield has been immense and he’s been a key player in four Champions League success in the last five seasons.

The Croatian will turn 33 later in September and the Spanish capital club will once again turn to the north London club to find a successor for Modric. Marca reports Christian Eriksen has been identified as one of the candidates to replace the ex-Tottenham star at Santiago Bernabeu.

Eriksen played a key role to help Denmark qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and standing out at the tournament could help his star rise higher. Madrid signed James Rodriguez after he starred for Colombia in the 2014 World Cup.

Madrid are not the only club interested in signing the Danish international. Their arch-rivals Barcelona are also interested at some level, and Sport claims the Catalan club have identified the Tottenham player as a replacement for Andres Iniesta.

Marca’s idea is that Eriksen would be tempted to move to Madrid and be the long term Modric replacement, even though they accept the two are different style players.

Madrid are not in a hurry to sign Eriksen this summer, but have the identified the 26-year-old as a long-term target. Any approach from them in signing the midfielder would not be easy as they have to deal with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

The 13-time European champions have already dealt with Levy when they signed Modric and Gareth Bale from Tottenham in 2012 and 2013 respectively. They are aware of Levy’s “well deserved reputation” of being a tough negotiator.

Tottenham have already secured Mauricio Pochettino’s future and Levy will be hoping to do the same with his key players, which includes Eriksen.

Whilst Marca give Eriksen the front page treatment, it seems, just like the Catalan media, to be an idea but nothing more than that. And that could be thanks to Levy.
