In March, Catalan newspaper Sport reported Tottenham were trying to lower Espanyol’s expectations of a Pau Lopez fee. Tottenham have a clause to buy Pau for €7m in the summer window, and if they send him back to Espanyol they’ll pay a fee of €500k for not going through with the deal.
Daniel Levy is pretty much feared in Spain, but Espanyol made it very clear they wouldn’t budge from the agreed amount. Mauricio Pochettino is well thought of at his former club Espanyol, but there was no intention of letting Pau go permanently at mates rates.
There’s also the balancing act for Espanyol: At what figure, in terms of the price Tottenham are trying to go down to, does it become a better idea to take Pau, and €500k, back?
Now Sport believe Pau will leave Espanyol and join Tottenham ‘for at least €5m’, which could see a discount of €2m for Spurs.
Pau Lopez is expected by the Catalan media to be Tottenham’s second choice goalkeeper next summer, behind Hugo Lloris. Michel Vorm would then likely leave the club.
