Crystal Palace are interested in Paraguayan defender Gustavo Gómez, according to claims from South America.

Outlet ABC reports the London side have scouted the player in a Copa America game, when he faced Colombia in the group stage.

That’s all they have to say for now, with no further information if Gomez has been scouted in other games as well.

Even after a 2-2 draw with Qatar, a 1-1 tie with Argentina and a 1-0 defeat to Colombia, Paraguay still managed to qualify for the knock-out stage.

Now they face the hosts Brazil in the quarter-finals, in a game which should be quite an important challenge for Gomez, so a great chance for Crystal Palace and others to watch him.

The 26-year-old currently belongs to Milan, but his loan at Palmeiras gives the Brazilian club an option to buy him until the last day of this month. The local press has been pretty convinced that this option is being triggered, with Palmeiras paying €4.5m for the permanent transfer.

That wouldn’t kill a deal, but would make it harder and more expensive.

Gustavo Gomez is not the first defender from a São Paulo based club who Crystal Palace have recently been linked to. Not long ago, it was claimed the Premier League side have been following Santos’ Lucas Veríssimo.
