Pau Lopez’s situation with Espanyol continues to be a soap opera.

Spending last season on loan with Tottenham Hotspur, the transfer was expected to be made permanent last summer.

The Tottenham didn’t want to pay the previously agreed fee (around €7) given Pau only had a year left on his contract. A much lower offer (with claims of around €2m) was knocked back by Espanyol and then Pau took advantage of a Diego Lopez injury lay-off to establish himself as the Spanish club’s number one.

Pau has been doing well, which has led Crystal Palace and Newcastle United to try and ‘finalise the signing’ of the young goalkeeper, report Sport.

Both Premier League clubs have been linked with a string of stoppers and it makes sense they’d be keen on Pau, especially given that, as it stands, he’s free at the end of the season.

However, Sport say the former Tottenham player has knocked back Crystal Palace and Newcastle because he’s not currently keen on a return to England. Napoli have made an approach and they’ve also been put on hold, as Pau wants every chance to agree a deal with Espanyol.

The Spanish club last week lost their patience and publicly stated there’d be no fresh efforts to try and get Pau to sign, demanding he and his agents make the effort if they want to talk again.

Sport believe that will happen and Pau present a counter-offer for renewal, if all that fails then he’ll be very much looking for a new club.

Tottenham have previously been linked with a possible return, and perhaps Crystal Palace and Newcastle should keep an eye on the situation.
