Former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly has received praise from the European media after bowing out of international football last night. The 40-year-old announced his retirement after this summer’s Euros, and played his last game for Hungary in a friendly with Sweden.
Csakfo Ci have reported on comments in the Swedish, Italian and German media after Kiraly played his final game for his country. The veteran goalkeeper played just 30 minutes of his side’s 2-0 defeat, and Sweden defender Pontus Jansson told Aftonbladet it was a nice gesture for Kiraly to receive a standing ovation from the fans.
The Leeds United star said it was a special moment, and it was nice to involved in such a game. Jansson’s international teammate Sam Larsson also commented on the night’s events saying it is something that won’t be forgotten, and especially with the famous jogging pants Kiraly has become known for.
There were also comments from the likes of Sportmediaset, UEFA and Sport1 who had their say on the night’s proceedings.
Kiraly spent three seasons with Crystal Palace, making over 100 league appearances for the club. The Hungarian became something of a cult hero with the Selhurst Park faithful for wearing jogging pants, and because of his eccentricity. Kirlay also had loan spells in England with Aston Villa, West Ham United and Fulham.
