On December 22nd, L’Equipe reported serious English interest in Karl Toko Ekambi. The Angers striker is his club’s top goalscorer so far this season, and his form has inevitably attracted interest from elsewhere.

Crystal Palace and West Brom were said to have ‘asked’ Angers the conditions for signing Ekambi in the January window, and offers were said to be on the way.

Fast forward a few days and France Football also have their own Ekambi claims. It’s claimed Crystal Palace, Everton and Burnley are all interested in the player who rejected Brighton in the summer despite the Seagulls offering to quadruple his wages.

West Brom aren’t mentioned at all, and it would be odd for them suddenly to drop out over Christmas. It would also be odd for Everton and Burnley to suddenly become interested over the five days between the reports, which come from the same publishing house.

From all of this we can probably work out that someone in France is pushing the idea of Ekambi moving to the Premier League. That may include them contacting English clubs, or it could all be a ploy to get a better wage out of Angers.

Both reports made a point of mentioning wages, and the PL riches on offer, which could suggest it’s all come from someone close to the player, rather than his club trying to drum up interest.
