Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino has spoken to his home country’s media following confirmation of the Reds’ Premier League title last night.
Quoted by Globo Esporte, the 28-year-old talked about the feeling of being English champions for the first time, following a long wait for the club.
“I’m very happy, really accomplished. We fought for that title for a long time, it escaped by one point last season. Now it came in a brilliant and deserved way, to crown this Liverpool generation, led by a fantastic coach. We expected for that day and it arrived. Unfortunately with closed doors, without the party that our fans deserve.”
The Brazilian has eight goals and seven assists in the Premier League so far this season, and didn’t miss a single game in the Reds’ title winning campaign.
“It’s nice to be marked in the history of one of the biggest clubs in the world, an honour to help raise the name of Liverpool. I’d like to thank my teammates and everyone in the club for making all this happen and making it possible. We worked too hard and were rewarded.”
Signed in a €40m deal from Hoffenheim back in 2015, Roberto Firmino now has his fourth title for the club, following the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, all of them last year.
He feels supporters have played a big part in it: “The fans were looking forward to that moment. This achievement is theirs, they push us in an impressive way, especially at Anfield. ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is chilling, it even moves your opponents.”
Following Liverpool’s glory last night, Brazilians trawled through Liverpool’s Facebook to see the comments about Firmino’s arrival back in 2015. There had been a lot of criticism regarding the price paid to get him from the Bundesliga side, and it was time to have a laugh about all those who thought he wasn’t worth it.
