There’s no denying that when Tottenham decided to bring in Pierluigi Gollini on loan from Atalanta, there was some reasoning behind it.
After all, Hugo Lloris isn’t getting any younger, and if the Frenchman started showing signs of decline, the Italian could jump in and take his spot.
However, the everlasting goalkeeper did anything but that, signing a new contract in the process, and showing just why he’s been near immovable at Tottenham since he signed from Lyon.
Antonio Conte will clearly count on him going forward, at least in the short-term, which is why Gollini sticking around at Spurs made little sense.
He returned to Italy, where he’s now being linked with a move to Fiorentina after a year spent largely on Tottenham’s bench.
That being said, Leonardo Gabbanini, who coached the player in the past, feels the player made the right move by giving the Premier League a go.
He told Firenze Viola: “I think he did well to go there, because he had all the credentials to play. The fact is that they have a world champion goalkeeper, he has shown he respects him and he left because he could no longer be backup to Lloris.”
All in all, Gollini made 10 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, conceding 11 goals and keeping two clean sheets.
