Jefferson Montero’s proposed move to Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito has been delayed as a result of the outbreak of Coronavirus.
The Swansea City winger is currently on loan at Birmingham City, who he joined in the summer in search of regular playing time.
It has been another frustrating season for him, though, as he has managed just 568 minutes of football in league and cup so far.
A report last month indicated he was set to return home and join Liga de Quito on a free transfer, with his contract at Swansea expiring in the summer and no desire for renewal from either side.
Talks were said to have ‘intensified’, with Montero needing to ‘define details’ before his return could be secured.
However, there has been no update on the potential move over the last month, and it seems the reason is because of the outbreak of COVID-19.
As quoted by Ecuavisa, Quito boss Esteban Paz revealed the virus had led to issues.
“We have not spoken with Jefferson Montero since February. Everything is truncated by that issue (Coronavirus). It put a brake on us,” he said.
That would suggest Montero will be waiting a while to seal his move, with the virus not looking likely to slow down in Europe for several months.
He will instead be hoping to try and force himself into contention at Birmingham and enjoy a strong end to the campaign there, whenever the Championship returns, before his deal at Swansea expires in June.
