Cádiz are waiting on FIFA before they push forward with attempts to have a recent ban overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The Spanish side were recently banned from signing players for two transfer windows after the arrival of defender Mamadou Mbaye from Watford last summer.
Watford argued that the player had moved to Spain without their permission, a claim FIFA upheld, banning Cádiz, suspending Mbaye for four months and ordering him to pay compensation to the Hornets.
Both Cádiz and Mbaye have pleaded innocence, insisting there has been a mistake and that they intend to have the decision overturned by CAS.
There have been numerous updates on the situation since, with Watford’s lawyer in the issue having spoken publicly about what’s going on and questioning Mbaye.
Diario de Cádiz provide a further update today and explain there has been no movement on the case as yet as the Spanish side are waiting to receive the ‘legal basis’ used by FIFA to determine their punishment.
This usually takes a month at most but has been delayed by the outbreak of Covid-19 so thus ‘could take longer’ than usual.
As soon as Cádiz receive those documents they play to request a ‘precautionary suspension of their ban which would see FIFA stop the matter until CAS make a decision.
That could take ‘several months’ to happen, potentially longer as a result of the Coronavirus and in the meantime, Cádiz would be able to carry on as standard with the ‘protective shield’ of the suspension.
The Spanish side continue to argue that they did nothing wrong and Mbaye was a free agent when they signed him, something which is evident in FIFA’s records.
They also argue that Watford had not ‘appeared on the scene’ or ‘claimed the presence of the player in its ranks’ until Cádiz signed him, adding another twist to a story that is not even close to being over with.
