RB Salzburg are eyeing up Manchester United in the Champions League draw and a reunion with Ralf Rangnick to boot.
Salzburg sealed their progression to the knockout stages of the Champions League earlier this week, finishing second in Group B behind Lille.
Manchester United likewise progressed as winners of Group F.
That means there is a distinct possibility the pair could meet each other in the next round, which would mean a reunion with a former club for Rangnick.
He spent two years as the sporting director at Salzburg before returning to Leipzig as manager in 2015.
That didn’t end his association with the Austrian club, with his role as Global Sports Director at Red Bull seeing him also overseeing them for another year.
And according to Austria’s Krone, Manchester United are the ‘clear favourite’ among those in charge at the club for who they want in the next round of the Champions League.
They’re the ‘preferred option’ for his successor Christopher Freund, who admits he has a ‘very special relationship’ with Rangnick, while coach Matthias Jassle is thinking the same way.
“I’ll take any opponent; there are only brutal firecrackers left. But I would agree with Christoph, Manchester United would be a cool story,” the newspaper report him saying.
It now remains to be seen whether the draw offers up what everyone is looking for, with this surely a story that fate can’t resist.
