Atlético Madrid are working to sign Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur, according to claims this week.

Outlet TuttoMercatoWeb reports that the 27-year-old is ‘in the sights’ of the La Liga side, as there are ‘contacts underway’ between the parties.

The Colchoneros are looking to strengthen their midfield for next season, and the Tottenham player is said to be the ‘favourite’ to be added to the squad.

The story doesn’t give clear details on the numbers that are on the table for the transfer. It’s only said that these will be ‘important days’ for a ‘possible white smoke’.

Højbjerg has a contract with Tottenham running until 2025, and is currently valued by Transfermarkt at €45m.

Signed from Southampton for only €16.6m in 2020, the midfielder gained big importance in Spurs’ squad in the past couple of years. This season, he made 44 appearances for the London side.

We shall now have to wait and see how much Spurs will demand to sell Höjbjerg this summer. In the past few years, the two clubs had already been in talks when negotiating the transfers of Toby Alderweireld, Kieran Trippier, Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty.
