Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly was acting as the club’s sporting director in the summer window.
The American billionaire is keen to bring in someone with experience for the director of football role. Over the past few days, Paris Saint-Germain advisor Luis Campos and Red Bull Salzburg chief Christoph Freund have been named as candidates.
On Wednesday, Austria’s LAOLA1 stated that Boehly will have to ‘make some moves’ to bring Freund to Chelsea. Later that day, the Blues settled for a 1-1 draw against Salzburg in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge.
After the tie, the 45-year-old dismissed reports linking him to the director of football job at the west London club. He made these comments to ServusTV and then went on to reveal that Chelsea tried signing Benjamin Šeško in the summer.
“We’ve been in constant contact with Chelsea, most recently about a potential transfer for Šeško. We’ve talked a lot about football but there’s not much more to it than that,” Freund said, as quoted by LAOLA1.
On August 7th, we covered claims from Slovenia that Chelsea were among several clubs to have showed interest in Šeško. Two days later, Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig agreed a deal for his transfer to the Bundesliga side in 2023.
