Over the past few days, we have seen a number of articles suggesting that Divock Origi could be heading to Milan.
The Serie A side are reportedly interested in the Liverpool player, whose contract at Anfield runs out in the summer, but there appears to be some confusion over whether or not the Reds can extend it.
We say this because Gazzetta dello Sport explain the player finds himself in a situation similar to the one Olivier Giroud was last year, which is that Chelsea eventually extended the Frenchman’s expiring contract by a year, forcing Milan to negotiate a few million to get the striker.
They say the 2022 deadline ‘can be updated by Liverpool when certain conditions are met’, and ‘in the event of a renewal, a negotiation and expense to be quantified would be necessary’ from Milan’s end.
However, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, when speaking to Calciomercato.it on Wednesday evening, had very different information.
He said: “There is a desire to see if there his the possibility of a renewal at the last minute, but it’s true that Milan are among the teams that are very interested. From what I know, there are no options (to renew). The moment is a bit special for Jürgen Klopp, because he doesn’t know which team he will have in the summer.”
Therefore, it appears the ball is in Liverpool’s hands, but if they do want to keep Origi and gift him to Klopp for a bit longer, they will have to do so with a proper renewal, not through an option in his current deal.
