For a player no one really cared about last season, the current transfer storm surrounding Sunderland’s Emmanuele Giaccherini is quite something.
Sent out on loan to Bologna last year, the player impressed so much he was chosen by Antonio Conte in his 2016 Euros squad, where his performances caught the eye of many scouts.
Since then, the list of clubs after the 31-year-old has grown larger by the day, and it’s quite hard to keep up with who’s in the lead.
Three weeks ago, it seemed to be Fiorentina, then it was Torino, and now it appears to be Napoli.
Reports regarding the latter of the three are all over the place, though.
The player’s agent has apparently denied any contact with Napoli (as reported by ChronicleLive), while Radio CRC contacted the player himself, who gave the standard “no comment” response.
Then we have well-respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reporting a meeting on Tuesday between Napoli and the player’s agent to discuss a potential move after the club’s manager gave the go ahead for the transfer.
Finally, Sportmediaset go all out and say the deal is pretty much done, with a €2m fee paid to Sunderland and a three-year contract worth €1.5m/year handed to the player.
If we were to guess, this seems very much like a case of a transfer being done very quickly now that the right offer has come along.
Giaccherini was reported as wanting things done ASAP, and that is exactly what appears to be happening.
