Failing to qualify for the World Cup, Algeria and their stars will be watching the tournament in Qatar from home.

Among those will be West Ham United’s Saïd Benrahma, who boasts 17 caps for his country, during which he has scored the one goal.

The 27-year-old, who has been with the Hammers since 2020, when he was brought in on a paid loan from Brentford before being bought outright for €23m, is a rotation option for David Moyes these days.

He has started just under half of his club’s Premier League games this season, and while that translates to 22 appearances in all competitions, his impact could be better, as he has four goals and two assists to his name to date in the current campaign.

Still, he has many who still firmly believe in him, especially in Algeria, as Salah Assad, a retired former Algerian striker, jumped to the West Ham player’s defence in an interview with Compétition, relayed by Algerie360.

He said: “For a while, I’ve only been talking about the pressure our players are under. Saïd Benrahma’s performances may have something to do with this pressure. He’s an excellent player. I like his way of attacking a lot. He is able to eliminate opponents with disconcerting ease. Without a shadow of a doubt, he and the whole team will kickstart at the same time.”
