For the past few days, several stories from the world sport media have claimed Wolverhampton Wanderers star Raúl Jiménez confirmed approaches from Juventus and Manchester United to sign him last summer.

Many articles and tweets quote the striker as saying: “One day I woke up and Juventus wanted me, another Manchester United. And what I know is that there were approaches made. It did not happen this time. If it happens at some point then it will have to be what is best for me, for Wolves, and the team that I join.”

However, things didn’t go exactly like that.

This interview had been covered by Sport Witness last Friday, and our story made it pretty clear that Raúl Jiménez was only talking about transfer rumours when it came to those two clubs.

If we read the full quotes, we can see that he first speaks about the rumours, and then uses Juventus and Manchester United as examples. That’s why our story never said he was confirming their interest.

“During vacations or a transfer window a new team will come out every day, what I knew was about the news, rumours,” Raul Jimenez told TUDN.

“One day I’d wake up and Juventus loved me, another it’d be Manchester United, and what I know is that there were approaches, but an agreement was never reached, nothing close, but I’m very good at Wolves.”

The quotes used by other outlets are using different parts of the interview to build one single paragraph that adapts to their narrative. This isn’t the first time this happens, as the European media isn’t always very careful when replicating speeches from abroad.

In this case, besides the poor editing, there’s also poor translation.
