Despite reports on the situation being around for some time, and the player’s camp appearing to push those, Jordi Alba still hasn’t been handed a new contract by Barcelona and his current deal expires in June 2020.

The club are right at the height of their wage ceiling and paying the fullback more money clearly isn’t seen as a priority right now. That’s led to some frustration but unless he wants to seriously push for a transfer there’s not a lot Alba can do other than wait.

Along with the insinuations of contract renewal interest, claims of interest from elsewhere are always present. On that note, Sport explain Manchester United are keen.

The Catalan newspaper name the Old Trafford along with Juventus as being interested in signing the player.

However, it’s stated that Barcelona simply aren’t going to hurry because there’s interest from elsewhere. It’s stated that in the offices of Barcelona the message to Manchester United and others is ‘quite clear’, and that’s: ‘They come and pay’

The meaning is Alba’s €150m release clause would need to be met for a transfer.

Given how well Luke Shaw has started the season, interest in Alba wouldn’t make a great deal of sense.
