Jose Mourinho taking over at Manchester United and immediately bringing in Eric Bailly from Villarreal, it seemed the Ivorian and Chris Smalling would be the starting centre-back pair at Old Trafford.
However, injuries to both of them saw the mergence of a solid alternative, as Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo showed they still had some life left in them, even displacing the aforementioned duo for a large chunk of the season.
This has helped the Argentinean defender regain his spot for his country during this international break, playing the full 90 minutes against Alexis Sanchez’s Chile in a 1-0 victory, much to the player’s delight.
Overall, however, things aren’t exactly going swimmingly for Argentina, and you’ll remember that, back in November, the whole squad appeared during a press conference to explain they wouldn’t talk to the press anymore following accusations made towards Ezequiel Lavezzi.
Marcos Rojo, it seems, has decided to break this ban, speaking on Tuesday to Jaque y Mate TV, where he opened up about the whole situation.
The Manchester United defender said: “That was all done due to a lack of respect. It was something that was growing, that we endured and endured, until it reached a point where it couldn’t go on anymore.
“It’s difficult because we’re under the magnifying glass the whole time. They say ‘they have to perform, they are the best, they come from abroad, and they don’t say hello to people’, yet instead of talking about football, they come up with nonsense.”
The 27-year-old has made 35 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United this season, scoring one goal and helping out with one assist along the way.
