Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s spell as Manchester United boss has been brilliant for the club, and also provided chances for youngsters looking to breakthrough.

Since the Norwegian was appointed, 19 year old Tahith Chong has made debuts in the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League.

That he was trusted to come on against PSG, and help with the famous victory in France, has seen people take more notice of the youngster.

That includes the Dutch media.

Chong was born in Curaçao, which is a Dutch administered island in the Caribbean. He moved to Rotterdam as a youngster and joined Feyenoord but the club weren’t able to keep him for as long as they’d have wanted, and in 2016 Manchester United swooped.

There’s some regret that Chong is now making his breakthrough in England, rather than the Netherlands.

Roy Makaay was the youngster’s coach at Feyenoord and he’s been speaking to De Telegraaf about the player and the blow of his exit.

Makaay told the Dutch newspaper: “Immediately it was clear that Tahith was a rare talent. An all-round winger. Skilful, in possession of an individual ability
and at lightning speed.”

On the player’s exit, he said: “We had seen it coming, though. The conversations about his first contract simply took too long. Against the financial power of Manchester United there was no way to compete. But however you look at it: it was a blow.”

Makaay didn’t want to put too much pressure on the youngster, but he believes there’s a chance that Chong and others could provide a bright future for the Dutch national team: “You should not put too much pressure on those young starters. But it says enough that Tahith was allowed to enter against Paris at such a crucial moment. But: the days of icons like Robben and Van Persie are almost counted.

“It is time for a new generation. We can look forward with Frenkie, Memphis, De Ligt and Van Dijk. Hopefully the generation that follows, with boys like Tahith, will eventually find a connection.”
